It seems a lot of us lived in this hangar, over the years. This is Hangar 2. There were two hangars close to Base Ops. This one is the closest to the Bomber Runway. There were a total of 6 of these hangars on the island. They were built in 1945. Hangar 2 was 90% complete in March of 1945. These six hangars were built specifically to accomodate the B-29. Other than one B-29 (The Amiable Amazon)which was on a troop moral run, no combat capable B-29s were ever on the island during WW-II. In the 1950s modified WB-29s were temporarilly based on the island. They're mission truely was "real" weather recon. The other kind of "weather" recon started in June 1958. Between the end of WW-II and the Cold War these hangars were leased to Northwest Orient Airlines.
As to Cripe's comments above; our imaginations and memories are truely curious things. I can assure you from my own personal knowledge and a collection of historic photos, these hangars were never painted like the Japanese Rising Suns.
As to King's comment above. Did you ever climb onto the roof of Hangar 2 and ride the rotating Beacon, naked? Ahhh, what memories.
