As part of the 'prairie' restoration whereby the NPS cuts down pecan trees because they are grafted and 'non- native' even though they are the state tree of Texas - to make way for grasses. Herbicides are also being used on the wetlands of the Johnson Settlement where this activity is taking place. Photo taken January 4, 2008. These trees were planted by Ava Cox who was one of Lyndon Johnson's cousins. The trees were about a hundred years old.
