Hingga akhir tahun 1980-an bagian timur dari pulau Sarena ini tidak mengalami abrasi hingga berlubang seperti ini. Menurut para pendahulu saksi hidup perang dunia kedua, abrasi bagian selatan (arah belakang) dari lubang ini diawali oleh gempuran bom tentara Jepang yang mencurigai ada kapal yang berlindung di sisinya. Padahal tak ada kapal, sehingga yang kena hantaman bom adalah bagian tanjung dari pulau Sarena ini. Itulah awal terjadinya abrasi hingga tanjung ini di tahun 1990-an mengalami abrasi berat hingga berlubang dengan diameter kurang-lebih 20 meter.
