I got there a little too late in the evening. An earlier shot wouldn't have the massive shadow across the plaque. I plan to go back and take a better picture asap. Terry B.
This has an interesting history. Has seen better days. Prior to WWII home to a German hermit who dug his home under the rock. Amazing stories from there. Thermal heating and cooling of the dewelling kept internal temps 20 gegrees cooler than desert temps at ground level. Built a runway from the dry lake and had a water collection that is seen in the light grey stripes horiziontally on the pic. This channeled water in barrels burried in the ground.
Stories have it as a stopping point for Amos and Andy from the radio days making friends with the german immegrant. Thye brought him radio equipment which he installed...antennas topping rock. With more development brought more people. America facing war with Germany brought parranioya.
The ending is sad with suicide and the local sheriff perishing in the self inflicted blast when the law came knocking at the door.
Presently serves as a camp spot for off roaders and partiers. Damage has been increasing through the years with large fires cracking major pieces of the rock free from the original beast. Trash, tagging and debrie are common at the location.
