The fog or low cloud of the coastal desert covers up to about 500 meters above sea level (Panoramio ID:25680224)and dry lands with blue sky extend above it. In Peru the altitude zone between 500 and 2500 meters on the Pacific slope of the Andes is named Yunga, that means hot valley. The valley slopes are covered by sparsely spaced grass and scrub, and continuous green is found only valley bottom where the water of stream from the Andes is available. The green belt extends from right to down ends of the photo is the irrigated land for orchards and so on along the Cañete River at about 800 meter above sea level. There are more than 50 streams of this type along the Peruvian Pacific coast, that make it possible for more than 50% of people of Peru to live in the coast region (La Costa) of desert environment. Photo: on October 15, 1986.

The city of Chañaral located at 100 km to the north of the Copiapó, the capital of the Atacama Region (3rd Region of Chile), is a loading port of mineral products such as copper from El Salvador and Potrerillos, and iron ore produced by mines in the Coastal Range. In spite of being in the rainless core region of the Atacama Desert, the coastal zone is covered frequently by fog or low cloud as shown in this photo. Photographed on August 31, 2003.

The core zone of the Atacama Desert extends over the inland plain about 2000 meters high behind (to the east of) the Coastal Range between Copiapó and Antofagasta. The Pan-American Highway (Route 5) passes here avoiding the rugged lands along the coast. The sea fog or low cloud common in the coastal zone does not reach here and the desert is always under the blue sky. Although the diurnal range of temperature reaches 30 to 35℃, the annual range is small (commonly 6 to 8℃), being characteristic of the coastal desert that is resulted in strong influences of the ocean. Because of the extremely stable atmosphere it rains hardly and there extends the terrain without vegetation widely. Photographed on September 1st, 2003.

Parts of the Atacama Desert higher than 2500 meters above sea level are under the highland desert climate. The annual precipitation of several tens millimeters make it possible to develop a dispersed vegetation. This photograph shows a pasture at 3150 meters high in the valley of the Paipote, a right bank tributary of the Copiapó River. Grasses grow both on the salty valley bottoms and on valley slopes with dispersed scrubs. A lot of cattle lane is found on slopes. Judged from the absence of cattle this can be a temporal pasture for transhumance. Photographed on August 30, 2003.
