Brittas - the word, is a direct borrowing from the Old French bretesche meaning "brattice/boarding/planking". The word refers to wooden defences often associated with a moat or castle-mound of the Anglo-Norman period; the use of the word "brittas" in place-names implies that the mound in question is an Anglo-Norman moat, rather than a native Irish raised earthwork.
I have a mobile home just off the strand and as far as I am aware, the southern end is known as Kilgorman Strand and the northern end is known as Clones Strand.
