This is the western side of the Battersea granite pluton which extends east to Dog and Crane Nest Lakes. Plutons form when molten granite rises in earth's crust, inflating a pocket under over lying rock, which later is erroded away. It lacks the compresses gases that makes volcanoes violent. It is 1.2 billion years old. Other plutons are found at Westport, Rockport, Gananoque, Kingston Mills, Rock Dunder at Morton and Perth Road.

About 473 hectares (1,170 acres) of land at the north end of the lake is now held by the Nature Conservancy of Canada to preserve it in this natural state. It was recently purchased for about $1.75 million dollars to add to the Frontenac Arch bio-diversity area.
