Glad to get the feed back. What more can you tell me? I have given 6 presentations on our old railways to date, and one 2 months ago specifically about the K&P. More work is being done on it. I now have over 200 photos on the K&P on Google Earth.
Are you aware that there were 2 railway spur lines, 2 canals and 3 tram lines in that area? I have worked with Les McGowan, Lorie Love and Don Lea on this project. We have a bit more work to do on the original horse drawn tram line from the iron mine on 30 Island Lake to Godfrey.
Hi again Steve - great picture of the old Howes Store. My mother grew up here and I spent many summers running around the grounds and catching tadpoles in the creek. I am so happy the new owner is keeping the place up.

Interesting to read the line is closed. I remember camping one night at Achray about 1985, before heading off for the Barron Gorge. That night a train came through at some ungodly hour, sounding like a low-flying jumbo jet, and woke us all up!

I am an explorer of our hinterland. I have known about these slab boards for the corduroy road for years, but it took low water levels and my polarizing filter to show it off well. They were once common before modern road building methods. Most are now under a lot of dirt and rock and cannot be seen. For another example, go down the Millhaven Creek from Sydenham Ontario, to the extension of the Railton and Scanlan Roads. It was a floating log road across a swamp, built before 1878, and last used in the late 1940's. Researching this stuff is half the fun. I gave a big presentation in Kingston last week on the K&P railway, this week on the Bay of Quinte Railway. Next week the presentation is on historic canoe and logging routes of southern Ontario. That took years of field research. Check east of Godfrey Ontario for a lot of such research.
The VIA station has just two trains a day stop there, they stop everywhere and is slow. There is one at 2 p.m. to Toronto, and another midnight one to Ottawa. There is no ticket agent. VIA does not want to stop there either, thus a lack of maintenance.

The school closed a year before I moved into the area, but it was a 2 room school, thus the 2nd. floor was a class room. It is also claimed to be haunted, but I didn't bother mentioning that.
On the right side of the screen, it says the photo was taken on January 13, 2015 at 8:58 a.m. at F5.6m 1/100 sec. I do remember it being very cold, and in the morning. Holding the camera in the cold was a problem. Next, batteries die in the cold and the camera has to be kept in my jacket when not in use. That is what it takes to get such photos.
