I am retired and exploring the world on foot, by canoe and kayak. You see and experience much more this way. No luxury resorts on some tropical beach for me.

Read about "Peak Oil" eventually the use of fuel the way we do now will end, and within our life time. It is not about the end of oil, it is about the end of oil that we can afford to use, the way we do. At that point, rail travel or at least bus service will be very popular. Rails are good for heavy loads, buses can be more efficient because they are much lighter, thus rail is not likely to make a come back no matter what, for many low density purposes, excluding commuter and inter city travel.

What were they mining here?

Good stuff. I am in Kingston, and it is a long way out of my way to research it. I am a paddler, not a cyclist, I was returning from the French, Pickerel and Key rivers when I photographed these rails. This is a good use of Google Earth. There is a lot of crap where people just want to post something with their name on it. I dont intend to go west of any postings that I have already made in your area and south to Toronto. I hope to discourage people that have very poor quality pictures, and title it "old train line" and nothing more. I hope you rise to the challenge of what this can be used for, for everyones benefit. I have now posted pictures of 32 ghost railways. I hope to get 40 done in eastern Ontario, then quit. That still leaves lots more in south west Ontario. Are you up to it?

I just reviewed your work, beautiful! It is good to see quality photography on Google Earth. There is so much very poor stuff cluttering it up. They dont seem to have any standard at all, despite having a few simple rules to follow. Their quality control is lacking. Hopefully, buy setting some good standards, it will inspire others.
