The first nuclear detonation in the Plowhare Program to develop peaceful uses for nuclear explosives was conducted below this spot at a depth of 1,216 feet in a stratum of rock salt. The explosive equivalent of 3,100 tons of TNT was detonated at the end of a horizontal passage leading from a vertical shaft located 1,116 feet southwest of this point. Among the many objectives was the production and recovery of useful radioactive isotopes, the study of heat recovery, the conduct of neutron physics experiments, and the provision of a seismic source for geophysical studies.
On St. Croix River north of Stillwater, MN. The marker reads:

The site of this tablet marks the Northern limit of Lake St. Croix, impounded by the natural dam of sand and gravel, made by the Mississippi where it is joined by the St. Croix River, twenty miles below Stillwater. The valley, with its steep banks, is typical of youthful topography - of a young stream - and its size, compared with the river, indicates that a much larger volume of water flowed here when the St. Croix was an outlet of glacial Lake Duluth, the ancestor of Lake Superior. The highway and picnic grounds occupy a river terrace on which the river flowed at an earlier stage. The rock walls of the valley are chiefly sandstones formed in the sea when it covered Minnesota during the Cambrian period 500 million years ago. Because of the thickness of the beds and the excellence of the exposures along the river, these formations wherever they appear in North America are known as the St. Croixian series.
Project Gnome was the first peaceful use of an underground nuclear device, and the first test outside of the Nevada Test Site. Emplaced in a 1,200 foot shaft, the 3.1 kiloton device was fired on Dec. 10, 1961. Unfortunately, the explosion vented radioactive gas, smoke and steam into the atmosphere through the vertical emplacement shaft. The planned results (testing of steam generation and isotope recovery) were unsuccessful.
Well casing for Project Faultless, an approx. 1 megaton nuclear explosion detonated at a depth of 3,275 feet. The explosion shattered windows in the White Pine High School in Ely, 87 miles away, and lead to a great deal of faulting. As a result of this test, it was concluded that no explosions of this size could be undertaken in the continental US, and subsequent tests took place on the remote island of Amchitka, AK.
Project Gasbuggy SGZ (Site Ground Zero) marker.
Gasbuggy was a 29 kiloton nuclear device, detonated at a depth of 4227 feet, on Dec. 10, 1967, as part of the Plowshare Program.
