I noticed that out west starting a little bit in Ohio and westward with those letter designations. As for the East, PA has state routes 5 numerical digits long no road name on the maps except to the locals of that area. Here in NJ everything is a number for the Super Highways to US Highways, to State Highways, to County Roads, some small roads are even numbers like in a city. Other than that names for the rest of roads in NJ.
As for traveling in NJ you really can't get lost real bad if you go furthest east you will see the Atlantic or NY, towards the West you will be at the Delaware. LOL

I am one right with you, the bike is the best way to experience everywhere in the world, especially the shore.. Just as long as the weather isn't too hot, I'd probably be in the Ocean swimming cooling off rather than biking.. LOL...

You know besides the flight of the Gull, the Parkway is now the only other road / highway on the east part of the state. Parts of old route 9 have been closed off now and rerouted onto the Parkway with the amount of people going down to this area of the Jersey shore I don't think its a good idea. For incase of Hurricanes, or other disasters that might the flight of the gull impassible. The only other way off the Islands to Mainland Nj is west like Rt 47 / 55 but that brings you towards Philly, not north towards NYC.
