To answer solwemi: Foula and its inhabitants is the fictional subject of a British movie made by Michael Powell in 1937 called "The Edge of the World." Go to http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0028818/ for more information about the movie.

The movie contains stunning photography of the cliffs (more than 300M high). The DVD has extra material.

The statue in front of this church is of St. Brigit (Breege, Bride), whose crozier staff stands for her heirarchical station in the church as monastic abbess. With St. Patrick, she is the patroness of Ireland. The liturgies served in this curch are all in gaelic Irish, the indiginous language of these islands, and to this day the first language before English of the local people.
