That Luang Stupa was initially built during the Ancient Khmer civilisation, when Vientiane was home to a people known as the "Cham".
According to the legend of That Phanom Stupa, the remains of Lord Buddha were distributed to all corners of the world where there were Buddhist followers and ashes were to be put inside 84,000 stupas. This number corresponded to 84,000 subject matters raised in tripitaka.
King Sayasetthathirath wanted to be a Bhothiyana, an 'enlightened one', he came up with the idea of surrounding the main stupa with 30 smaller satallites of equal size known as Palami stupas.
That Luang Stupa was built of bricks and lime. Boulders were placed to form the 91 metre-by-75 metre base of the grand stupa, which is decorated with 323 lotus petal formations.
Prayers stations are found on the north, south, east and west faces, which can be acessed by arched stairways. Just above the players stations are four straight starways which pass through archways that open up to the 30 satellite stupas and a walkway surrounding the stupa.
The end of Buddhist Lent is held on the 15 th day of the waxing moon. Many important ceremonies mark this day.
