The Pelourinho, also popularly referred to as pinking is a stone pillar placed in a public place of a city or town where criminals were punished and exposed. And they had a right to pillory the large grantees, bishops, fit and monasteries as evidence and instrument of feudal jurisdiction. The pillories were, at least since the late fifteenth century, considered the standard or the symbol of municipal freedom. For some historians, such as Alexandre Herculano, the term pillory only begins to appear in the seventeenth century, instead of the term pillory, of popular origin. Since then it became only the March municipal. Before that time, according to Herculaneum, the pillory was a derivation of very ancient customs, the erection in the cities of ius italicum statues of Marsyas or Silenus, symbols of municipal freedoms. But other historians refer to the Columna Columna or Roman Moenia, erect pole in a public square in which the sentenced were exposed to the scorn of the people. It seems that before the fifteenth century have been some executions in the pillories. But from there there is no evidence that it succeeded, at least in relation to the executions, which were hanged after being exposed in the pillory for knowledge of the people
