Translated from a notice in the church portal: Mascaras - in very pretty surroundings, this little village in Gers has been here for a very long time. Its origin is tied to the foundation of an abbey mentioned in 1088 in an act of settlement made by St Cristaud; however, it soon vanished. In our times, the rich traditions of the land are still written in the lives of the inhabitants. The charming church with its old bell wall watches over the village endowed with a chateau built on an even older edifice. Here, one is plunged into the heart of a nature generous and preserved. A beautiful panorama of the hills and walks in the forest are a true pleasure!

Dans un environnement très attractif, ce petit village du Gers a vu le jour voilà bien longtemps. Son origine est liée à la fondation d'une abbeye mentionnée en 1088 dans un acte de donation de Saint Cristaud; sa trace cependent disparaît assez tôt. Dans nos jours, les riches traditions du pays sont encore inscrites dans la vie des habitants. La charmante église à clocher-mur veille sur le village doté d'un chateau reconstruit sur un édifice plus ancien. Ici, on est plongé au cœur d'une nature généreuse et présérvée. Un beau panorama s'offre sur les coteaux environnants et les promenades en forêt sont un vrai plaisir!

The inscription translates as In this place, on 29 March 1944, the Maquis of Banios was attacked by the German army. SARRAT Eugène, Mayor of Banios DABAT Jean, Municipal Councillor Were arrested, deported, and died in an extermination camp in Germany.
