C'est Méhémet Ali, vice-roi d'Égypte, qui, à l'instigation du baron Taylor puis de Jean-François Champollion, offrit à la France au début de 1830 les deux obélisques érigés devant le temple de Louxor, mais seul celui de droite (en regardant le temple) fut abattu et transporté vers la France.
