Coal tax posts were generally placed alongside highways, canals and railway tracks after 1861 to identify the boundary of the London Metropolitan District and marked the point where taxes would have to be paid on coal and other commodities entering London. This one, beside a footpath in the woods, may have been sited there because traders were using the path to avoid the tax collectors on the main routes.
