Through the Balcombe family this house was built and became a reliquary for items with connections to Napoleon. Balcombe as an East India Agent had allowed the exiled Emperor to live in his house on St Helena (The Briars). When Balcombe later was posted to Australia as Treasurer to New South Wales, one of his descendants built 'The Briars' in Mount Martha VIC. It is now a National Heritage site.
