In the Middachter woods lies a boulder of 180x100x70 cm, weighing approximately 3,000 kg. This presence can be explained by the sliding of the ice, one million years ago, during the last ice age, when the pushed moraines formed the Veluwe. But folk tale has it, that it's the devil's work! It was the devil who threw the stone from the Doesburg-tower right over the river IJssel, in between the hamlets Ellecom and De Steeg, upon this moraine ridge of the Middachter Forest. The imprint of his three fingers (toes caprine) are shown as three cavities in the stone's surface. Why the devil threw the stone tells the story not. Another folk story about the stone says that the stone bleeds if you give it a pin prick
According to Buddhism we only reincarnate in animals, not in plants. But Vasalis, one of our formemost poets (she had mystic experiences) begins a famous poem like this:
Ik droomde dat ik langzaam leefde /
langzamer dan de oudste steen..
I dreamed that I was living slowly
more slowly than the oldest stone..

I think she talks about the swallow (klick!)
Didn't she sing barefooted?
My little dead bird is the blue tit.
