John Daly was born in Eugene, Oregon, in 1944. Within his first year he became a Californian when his family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. John attended the University of California San Francisco where he graduated with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Creative Writing and Sociology. After college, John began travels that would lead him to more than 50 countries and develop a strong interest in photography. He lived in Japan for more than a year where he studied Aikido, Tea Ceremony and poetry. A few years later he lived and worked as a teacher for two years in Lima, Peru. John has photographed in both Color and Black and White, using mainly Nikons and a Calumet 4x5. For the last five years he has moved to the digital format with Canon equipment, currently the Canon EOS D5 Mark II. Daly’s photographs have been exhibited in numerous individual and group exhibitions, most currently, the Wild and Scenic Film Festival in Nevada City, CA. His work is in private collections and in commercial venues. As an artist John sees the photographic image in much the same way as the Japanese Haiku he studied and wrote in the past. Each poem creates a singular emotional response in the reader. With his photographs he tries to evoke in the viewer the same kind of response, something each viewer will bring to the image and take from the image, not only as a visual memory but, as something transformational that takes the viewer beyond the image itself. For the past 30 years he has lived in the Artistic community of Nevada City, CA with his wife and three daughters
