this used to be a humble oil gas station (..and route 8) in the 60's. us kids used to sneak over here from tamsin park to buy cigs. one of us would distract the clerk while another got the smokes from the machine. the hard part was coming up with the 40 cents!
Thanks swimmerbob, did I get it right this time?
did you have your camera up on a kite or what??
this parking lot does not 'belong to UCSD'- it is part of torrey pines city beach. the city of san diego, the salk institute, and residents of la jolla farms HOA all retain legal access to this lot via an easement shared with UCSD university house, located near the top of the road.
this should be correctly labeled as ron burkle's black's beach estate- you can't even see black's beach in this shot...
this is ocotillo wells state vehicular rec area. the town of ocotillo ca. is located about 25 miles to the south near interstate. the airport and park icons are incorrectly labeled.
very cool. was the air station shut down when you left? i was in there on christmas in the early 90's and the place was very much intact. i guess its mostly gone now. i wish i had taken some pics. do you have any you could post?
just up the hill from that tree on the right (with exposed roots) is the old entrance to icebox cave. as you go up the hill (be careful you can be cited for leaving the trail) veer to the right and you will see the fissure and two manmade brick/stone walls were someone tried to close it off. we used to climb over those walls and go inside when we were kids. the gorge was our playground and we knew every inch of the park and river. great times!
