I was part of the nuclear cleanup between 1977-1980. I arrived in February of 1978, while the Dome started construction. Enewetak is very beautiful and calming. The scuba diving was amazing. In answer to your question to another poster, yes, we are suffering from ill effects from our time there. Many have passed away from Cancers and other radiogenic diseases. Personally, I have had late stage colon cancer, polyps on my thyroid, gall bladder removed, kidneys failing, a growing spot on my liver, a lung disease caused by inhalation of Cesium and many other ailments. I was under VA care for some time, but they almost drove me into bankruptcy by denying my benefits. They are still taking money from my pay that I do not owe. All of our records have been lost, and they continually tell us that we were never there. There are still high levels of radiation on the northern half of the atoll. It will not be safe for over 120,000 years. We were never allowed any protective gear while there. The most we ever had were paper painters masks, which were always on back order. All of the debris from Bikini was taken to Enewetak for disposal, as was soil from the Nevada Test Site. The soil from Nevada was replacement soil for the islands that had 18 inches scraped from the top and deposited in to the crater. It would be like putting out a fire with a match. I suspect that Global warming was caused by Nuclear Testing with 2000 detonations world-wide since the beginning of nuclear testing by the U.S.alone. Not including a host of other countries that also did testing. One bomb that was detonated, was 1,000 times stronger than it was supposed to be. They used Plutonium 239 for the blast and Plutonium 237 for the propellant. During the explosion there was an atomic reaction between the Plutonium 239 and the Plutonium 237, that changed the properties to all Plutonium 239. This made the bomb 1000 times stronger than what was anticipated. Within 24 hours, fallout covered the entire earth and could be seen in cluster throughout the world. Michigan had fallout within 16 hours of that explosion. It was the first Thermonuclear bomb that the U.S. had detonated. That bomb was the one that spread to nearby atolls and wreaked havoc on several island chains and atolls. It caused radiation poisoning among the Marshallese People, birth defects and a continual health fight. The U.S. has never lived up to their obligation to the people of the Marshall Islands. Not only were there Human Rights Violations, but also our troops were put in harms way for no reason. Radiation, in spite of what scientist's say, can not be cleaned up or just washed away. As of just a few months ago, some reporters from the Guardian were there. They had no food other than spam, bottled water, chips and jello cups. They also had to be quarantined before they could leave the islands. No one is allowed to travel without permission from the U.S. State Department and there are no commercial airlines that fly in and out. If you want more information, look up: atomiccleanupvets.com to read the stories of the veteran's that survived. We are currently trying to pass a Bill in the House that would include us in with the Atomic Veteran's Category with the Department of Defense, so we could be compensated and gain healthcare. By the way, your photos were exceptional and I know where each of those were taken. I thank you for sharing those. It brought back many memories. Our Bill is HR 3870. If you that live in America & could call your congressmen and congresswomen to ask for support of this bill, it would be greatly appreciated. So far, out of 2,000 troops that spanned a time period of three years on Lojwa, only 127 are survivors. If you see larger numbers on Facebook or other social media sites, keep in mind that everyone's family is also included for the numbers for our fight for benefits. We are too young for this to have unexplained illnesses, sterility in some, birth defects in our children and grandchildren is incomprehensible.
