Thank you for your photos. They are very familiar to us, having driven the Alcan Hwy. numerous times. Sorry, those are spruce, probably black spruce. Not a birch to be seen.
Greetings from Texas, USA (formerly for years in Alaska).
It is the property of the British government. It was determined that it would be more valuable as a military resource. The inhabitants, not natives, were removed and only military personnel, civilian contractors, and merchant marines are permitted on the island. Those inhabitants were slaves and their plantation overseers. The donkeys and chickens remain wild.
Awesome, I got a set of aquafine in the PX when I arrived in Feb 1973 and snorkeled only in the lagoon, it was like a Jacques Costreau Special, the fish acted liked they never saw a human before, they were so curious the saltwater and sun bleached my hair platium(sp) MCB74 BU2 Will McMorris Albany NY-yoggle369@gmail.com 43 years ago
Sorry but that's not really the truth of it. When our community, not town, was built it was just a pit stop on the ak highway. No one could come up with a name for it so they agreed to name it after a dog, "Tok" who traveled with the road crew

Absolutely the most beautiful place
But wait...in a just-discovered phenom...street-view still has the old elevator, at least for now 6/1/15. Check it out!
This is actually near the old Henry Place and the building is the Catlow Valley school.
