If this Island is maintained by the US military, it's doing a very bad job.

Flying into Wake on C-141's from 1971 through 1976, we would always bring in a couple of coffee cans of dirt from Hickam to help create the greens. Naturally, with the island only 8 feet above sea level, any major storm washed the attempts away.

I believe that welcome sign was there when I first visited Wake in the forties
