Thanks for the correction Peter, didn't know why 'lake' wasn't needed but I have read 'Mere' means lake (thanks Wikipedia!)... it's like when someone says "Lake Loch Ness" haha... Greetings from Perú.

Originally thought to be in the shape of a T as the land owners are the Trotter family and others say it signifies the Knights Templar, which is more appropriate if it is indeed in the shape of the Maltese cross.

Actually this is called the Black Angel because it commemmorates the Boer War and the men of Penrith and the Borders who died in it. It used to stand at the junction of Brunswick Road and Hunter Lane when I went to school in Penrith between 1960 and 1963
