In this area two regiments of the 106th US Inf. Division surrendered in front of the german 5th SS Panzer Armee in the early Battle of the Bulge. At least 7.000 soldiers were encircled and captured on that hill, after the germans shelled this area for two days and killed on that way some hundred other soldiers of the units that were holding this area. It was the biggest number of soldiers, US army lost as POW´s on one day in history. The woods are full of foxholes, bunkers and any kind of war debris.
