AndyMack's conversations
Hi Andy: I've enjoyed your pics from the Catskills region- particularly the vintage highway signs. I'll have to keep my eyes open. I've been posting pictures taken at and around the Ashokan and on various trails. As the weather gets worse, I'll probably put up more.
Thanks again - Dave H.

From the NY State Dept. of Environmental Conservation website: Devil's Tombstone is located in a rugged mountain pass in the Catskill Mountains called Stony Clove. The word "clove" comes from the old Dutch word "Kloove", which means "gash or cut in the body of mother earth". It is rumored that Stony Clove was a favorite haunt of the Devil during the early days in settlement of the Catskills. One object closely associated with the Devil still survives in the campground, it is the Devil's Tombstone. The tombstone is a large boulder, approximately seven feet by five, which was probably carried down the mountain many centuries ago by a landslide or glacier.
Devil's Tombstone is one of the oldest New York State campgrounds. It is a small primitive campground with wooded sites and a small shallow lake, Notch Lake. No swimming or boating is permitted on the lake. The campground is a haven for serious hikers. The "Devil's Path" trails are accessible from the parking lot at the north end of the campground.

From Wikipedia: USS Slater (DE-766) is a Cannon-class destroyer escort of the United States Navy. The ship was named for Frank O. Slater of Alabama, a sailor killed aboard the USS San Francisco during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942. The USS Slater is currently the only memorial/museum Destroyer Escort ship still afloat. It now is a museum ship on the Hudson River in Albany, New York.

The light blue bridge (Castleton Bridge) in front carries the New York State Thruway over the river (4 lanes), and the adjacent dark-colored span in the background carries a CSX railroad line. The R.R. bridge is named the Alfred H. Smith Memorial Bridge, which was named for the then-President of the N.Y. Central R.R. when construction was completed in 1924.
