As far as you can go on Broad River without climbing over or under logs. Whoever chained the canoe to the tree probably planned on going farther up the river for fishing or poaching or who knows what.

The water here is fresh enough for sawgrass and mahogany to grow.

March 2006: In the summer of 2005 this area received a 4 foot storm surge from hurricane Katrina and an 8 foot storm surge from hurricane Wilma. There are large logs hanging in the trees 10 feet above the water. Notice only one mangrove has begun to grow new leaves.

The mosquito population declines from January into April unless there is heavy rain. They are usually not bad during the day. After dark they can be pretty annoying. Expect no-see-ums at Shark River, Harney River, and Broad River and on beach sites if there isn't a breeze. Use bug dope. You can wear a rain suit or a mesh bug suit if they get really bad. January and February are the best time for fishing the rivers and back bays. Sea trout arrive in February for the March spawn. In March look for tarpon in North River, Wood River and Tarpon Bay. Use a camp stove to cook. All the chickees have burned spots on the deck from hibachis. You could use a charcoal grill with legs. Canepatch and some of the other land sites have grills. At beach sites campfires are permitted below the high tide line.
