Hi, This brick built chimney is is known as Black Mill and is the chimney for an old dissused steam pump. The old derelict pump house is at the base of the chimney and there is a small victorian cast iron sluice gate and an iron pinion wheel with oak teeth still fairly intact. The pump would have been used for marsh drainage and probably replaced an earlier wind pump.

This site insists on silence after 10.30pm, views are wonderful and we love it. If you want to visit this site, remember its on the left of the lane.

I think I know which roads you mean - Thursden and Blake dean? I've had a few "moments" there in icy conditions! I was up there yesterday and they were flying rocks in by helicopter to stop people driving over the edge. You should have a drive over Hardknott in winter - very scary - but do-able!

Thanks for that Keith. I'm sure that I already had mapped that photo (and a few others) but I'll have another go and see what happens.
