Paxton Pits is a working sand and gravel quarry. The sand exists under the topsoil, and is excavated, leaving large holes.
These holes are filled with water, and handed over to the RSPB to become part of the Paxton Pits Nature Reserve.

Paxton Pits is a sand and gravel quarry, that has been (and is still ongoing) converted to an RSPB nature reserve, amongst other things.
On walking around the pits, you may stumble across this piece of machinery, which I can only presume used to be used in the mining activities.
It has 4 heavy concrete blocks, although now one of them is missing. It has two massive wheels, peppered with rectangular holes, and a sloped axel.
Apart from the two 'wheels' in the centre, there are no others. It looks like it is dragged along the ground.
I can imagine it is used to push small sand out to the sides, and leave the larger rocks / stones alone.

The Black Cat Roundabout on the A1 near the Bedfordshire / Cambridgeshire border.
The Roundabout is named after the black cat Garage, from the 1920s.
In 2004, a small team installed a large metal black cat in the centre of the roundabout - this cat had the same profile as the original black cat on the garage in the 20s.
In 2006, the new A421 Great Barford Bypass was completed, and the roundabout was enlarged, and a new, larger black cat became resident.
Some time later in the year, the poor cat was stolen, and it was replaced with the current one, which stands about 22' high.
