Did you know that the Madaket is the oldest working ferry in the United States? Or that she has the smallest bar in California?
Built in 1910 as part of the fleet of seven ferries which once flourished here, the Maddie is a steam-driven boat that is now owned by the Humboldt Bay Maritime Museum and remains the oldest passenger vessel in continuous service in the U.S.
Nowadays, the afternoon bay cruises are a welcome treat for residents and tourists alike. I don't recall just how many folks Maddie holds, but I remember feeling a bit crowded with around twenty on board. The real fun is in sitting on deck (with appropriate libation in hand) and shutting my eyes while listening to the putt putt of Maddie's little donkey steam engine... the warmth of the sun... her gentle rocking carries me back through time and onto that most well-known little claptrap tugboat, the African Queen... and Bogey is by my side grinning his wry grin.
What better a way to spend a lazy summer's afternoon?
