Pictures of our Atlas Mountain trek in Morocco. We started in Skoura, outside of Ourzazate, on the south side of the Atlas Mountains. Then we hiked and hitched rides north as we crossed the mountains among remote Berber villages. Our route took us just west of Ighil Mgoun, the second highest mountain in Morocco. It was a step back in time as we walked by towns without roads or electricity; locals living as they did hundreds of years ago. Scattered throughout the region are gites which are essentially bed and breakfasts. They're basically local homes with an extra room to put up travelers for the night. Dinner and breakfast are included and you eat whatever the family eats that night (almost always tajine or couscous). These villages are remote, there are very few restaurants or hot showers. But, if you enjoy strenous hiking, untouched mountain vistas and meeting local Berber people, it's a trip of a lifetime. Note: Amzri is my spelling to better convey proper pronounciation, you'll see it listed as both Amezri and Amerzi.
