For the not to speedy tourist the spectacular Franchhoek Pass is a a good alternative to the equally impressive Du Toitskloof Pass which is used by many heavy trucks whose drivers do not want to pay the modest fee for the Huguenot Toll Tunnel.

The beaches near Arniston look unspoilt, but unfortunately the adjacant sand dunes are the playground for many off road vehicles despite the legal status of the area as a protected nature reserve of CAPE NATURE.

Only a couple of weeks before the big flood in November 2008 many children were swimming in the peaceful Buffeljagsrivier which after three days of rain turned into a mighty torrential river.

In the afternoon of 10 November 2008 it started to rain heavily in Swellendam and all over the Overberg. It did not stop until 13 November after a downpour of about 300 mm. This time the bridge was only damaged whereas in December 2005 it was totally destroyed.
