I am, by no means, an expert on Buddhism; however, this is what I have found.
The ball is called the hoshunotama (wish-fulfilling jewel). The jewel signifies his bestowal of blessings on all who suffer, for the hoshunotama is a gem that grants wishes, pacifies desires, and brings clear understanding of the Dharma (Buddhist law).
