I don't know! I've only ever clocked them from the back of taxis on flyovers in Frankfurt and Düsseldorf - the allotments seemed to extend right under the flyovers. Not exactly a restful environment.

Thanks for the comment David you were right about it being a scan of an old photo -I took it about ten years ago but the subject matter seems timeless, its funny isnt it they always seem to be under duress.
There is something about little old ladies sitting by the seaside which is wonderfully attractive to the British photographer. The headscarves are the cherry on the cake for this one. A sign of an earlier more genteel time. The retro look of this image (a manipulation of a scanned print?) suits the subject matter very well.
I wasn't so lucky, though the small dog was a consolation prize. The composition was less successful, more awkward than yours as well. http://www.panoramio.com/photo/22960121
