I stood at these 'blowholes' in 1965 and 1966 and thought they were the tops of ancient grain silos, partially submerged by a coast line that had sunk. Close by, I recall, one could snorkel along the coast and look down to see the slipways down which the ancients launched their galleys. Perhaps the escarpment towards Cyrene was deforested by the ancients to provide timber for their ships. I have abiding memories of this wonderful place and hope that future generations will be as awestruck as I was when I first set eyes on this ancient legacy. Thank you, Klaudius, for the memory!
