That is pathetic. I visited this aspen clone a few years ago and took pictures, which all folks on Panoramio can see. It was nice then.

I have seen this kind of thing all too many times. Why do the cattle always seem to get into what they are intended to be excluded from?

I love this country, but try to visit early in the summer before this happens. Of course, the damage does not go away with a little green up in May and June.

Great photos, Buffalo Guy. People all over the world need to see this all- too-common, unnecessary degradation of the American West.

Thank you scfam . You are 100% right!

Suggest you read Dan Daggett. Where do you live Buffalo_Guy?

Remind me never to get in to an argument with a half-wit who's only response to debate is name calling.

Thank you Obi Wan.

The riparian areas on the lower west slope of the Ruby Mountains have severely contracted due to poor grazing practices which dry out a drainage and reduce it's overall stream flow due to the cumulative effects caused by trampling, vegetation removal, and the resulting erosion. These streams would normally be flowing later into the year but so much of the riparian soils have been removed that they are unable to hold wat for as long as they once did. The runoff now occurs over a shorter period of time so the lower elevation stretches like these don't have water as late into the year as they once did. The ranchers who comment on these photos have a very limited perspective and only see the landscape from the point of view of resource extraction at the expense of the taxpayer and the wildlife that depend on the health of these landscapes. They only want the money that comes from them and don't want anyone else to have a say in how they are managed.

Note the collapsing stream banks with hoof sheer caused by cattle. Also note the heavily grazed grassy area which would normally be covered with tall riparian brush like willows and chokecherry bushes.

The stream is heavily impacted throughout its reach and is still being impacted by welfare ranching. The cows need to go.
