Huh, I hope I remember well about this joke. So, it is a competition between north and south island. South island ususally the Mainland and north island usually called itself New Zealand. When people visit here from north sometimes south islanders ask: Where did you came from? - From ... (somewhere from north i.) - Ah, so, did you came to New Zealand? :)
It is just a spicy humourous story what I heard here long time ago and stacked in my mind :) But if you see NZ`s natural history the 3 islands were ONE land about 18,000 years ago :) before the Ice age ...
