Imagine formally began in the year 1999. It was founded by Joe & Lorraine Williams who have lived in Mozambique since 1989.
Initially they were employed on a British Government sponsored aid project with the then called ODA (now DFID). During the early years, war ravaged throughout Mozambique and it was virtually impossible to travel anywhere beyond inner Maputo by car. During lunch breaks and weekends they spent their time helping various charities and local institutions, in particular, with the newly arrived Mother Teresa Sisters (Missionaries of Charity).
When their work contract came to an end, they decided that they could afford to stay, voluntarily, for a further 2 years – to finish off the projects they were involved with.
Such was their naivety !
Whenever one project was completed, another 2 or 3 were taken on-board. This continued over a number of years. Visits to England always included promises to family that they would soon finish their Mozambican adventure – “Just give us one more year”, they said. In 1999 it had become obvious to all concerned that this “promise” could just not be kept. It was then that they decided to form Imagine and to dedicate their lives to Mozambique.
Imagine is a question and a challenge for us to break down the barriers we sometimes impose on ourselves by lack of belief. We need to look beyond what we feel may be possible to what will be possible if only we had sufficient belief. We encourage ourselves and others to :-
“Imagine” what difference we could make to “our world” - “Imagine” what difference we could make to “another’s world”
