FWIW, "American" in this title is a tad incomplete. This facility was used by the Brits as well. The structures were built and maintained by (West) German contractors.
One might also note that information gathered at Teufelsberg during its operation was vital to the overarching effort that kept Europe from being annexed by the Soviet Union during the 25+ years prior to 1989.
