This Memorial is not to the Titanic or the passengers but to the Engineering Officers who lost their lives and stayed at their posts. Refurbished in 2010 it is constructed chiefly in granite and bronze by Joseph Whitehead and Sons in their London works at Kennington. The winged figure dominating is not an angel but the Greek winged goddess of Victory Nike and is seen on many other memorials possibly signifying victory over death - she stands on the prow of a ship to represent the maritime connection. The engineer shown in bas relief at the controls is my mother's father Frederick William Hatfield (b 15 Oct 1878 d 19 Sep 1954) He was a greaser/stoker on several other White Star Line vessels. Ironically he was sunk at sea on the sister ship Britannic in 1916 off Kea Greece - but happily survived - He was not on the Titanic but scarely a street in Southampton was not affected by the tragedy
