Grew up in Seagate (When it was spelled "SEA GATE.") The waterway/creek at the northern portion of the area was one of the openings to the Verazzano Narrows. I will always remember a neighbor, living across my street. He was the most generous and nicest man. "Sol" had a boat docked in the waterway, and gave me my FIRST experience on water skies. As I became adept, he would take me out, skiing in open water, observing large cruise and cargo ships entering or exiting the Narrows, to dock in Manhattan.
Sol also managed to come outside in the early evenings, bringing with him GALLONS of ice cream, offering it to the children playing outside...YUM! Finally, I also recall the first color television I watched was in the den of his home. It was the first time watching the YANKEES in their blue pinstripes, playing on a field, with grass so green, II had to pinch myself, reminding myself the TV picture reflected the world as it really looked, rather than the view previously accustomed to as black, white, and grey.
While the TV''s have become technologically magnificent, reflecting colors at their clearest, it is the world being what TV's used to be: black, whit, and mostly grey.
A toast and remembrance to Sol, growing up in SEAGATE, BROOKLYN.
