saudades de 1968 when we nearly lost a Peace Corps jeep trying to cross a tidal river. When we asked an elderly gentleman near by if the tide was rising or falling, he replied "Esta chegando, senora". In Ugly American style, my husband raced up the beach to Prainha and offered one mil to any man who would run back with him to liberate the jeep. Not sure who was happier: the two of us, or the twenty of them.
