Monument built in memory of Doctor Tomás Uribe Uribe M.D.
This building was designed by Jesús A. Molina Vega in 1942 as a tribute to the extraordinary doctor, citizen and human being. Tomás Uribe Uribe changed the way in which medicine was practiced at the beginning of the XX century, specially in all areas pertaining preventive medicine for children.
A Presidential Decree regimented the use of the monument to a children's dispensary, as well as a children's library and recreational facility. It would be additionally, a distribution center of milk for supplementing the diet of malnourished infants.
There would be a Red Cross First Aid secction, a Clinical Lab and Doctors and Surgeons offices. This is why Mr. Miguel Pineda was confused with the old hospital, San Antonio (founded by Dr. Uribe Uribe) which was destroyed many years ago?
Memory and gratefulness are short lived and the Welfare Institution took over the premises, covering the front lawn with horrid old tires and painting pink, the stately, Art Deco monument. On the second floor of the facade, the name of the good Doctor, TOMAS URIBE URIBE lives on ...
