In the 60s? It was like that through the 90s and even early 2000s. Only after Larry Green spent many many years getting legal access open did Fish and Wildlife redo some of the roads. It is a longer drive for access these days than it used to be, but well worth it.

When we did the Milford in 1992, we had only one day of misserable with a few hours of damp, but brother & family did it a few years later & did not see the sun from leaving Christchurch until getting back home about 8 days later! Can be pretty wild weather sometimes.

Nice & flat that day, but along there, somewhere, MacKinnon drowned, many years ago. Supposed to be one of the largest bodies of water in NZ Lake Te Anau.
Takes a quite a long time to get from embarking to disembarking when you do the Milford Track.

Some other tree that grew around a palmetto tree near the north beach picnic area of Ft. DeSoto. the blacked areas are scorch markings from a prescribed burn the previous winter.
