This is a great beach. It's a long bumpy ride to get there but it's worth it. And being on the north coast, the trees throw a bit of shade and allow you to gaze out over the water.

It's a nice hike up to the summit. Go up through the field from the parking lot until you see the trail marker. There's a gentler trail to the right; the more strenuous climb leads to the left up the small rock steps. It's a very pleasant picnic site on top with sweeping views to Acadia.

Not quite. The line of the 20th ME extended to the left some 100 yards to where the regimental monument stands today. Until they refused their left flank during the attack, THAT was the end of the Union line.

Rodger- I just found some 1944 photos of an airstrike on Pagan by planes from the USS Langley. Many terrain features are clearly visible. I'm waiting to have them "reviewed" for posting. can email photos if you want to see them now. Chris Marks

Are you sure this isn't the cupola on the Lutheran church downtown near the Diamond? The two are virtually identical but the base of the Seminary cupola is white (this appears dark and shingled) and there are no trees positioned at the Seminary so as to get this picture.

NI Kress- I just found two aerial strike pictures on Pagan in 1944 made by my father's squadron. Many terrain features are still there- the island hasn't changed much in 65 years. I think I posted the picture correctly on Google Earth/Panorimo but I'm not sure. Have similar pictures on Guam and Rota.

Despite the words on the marker, Custer's body was found at the top of the hill near the monument. He was buried for a year in the shallow grave where this marker stands. His remains were then taken to the cemetery at West Point.
