Doris, The Green Bike & Irondale Hill. Doris Crandall rode a Green, 1953 Panhead H.D. with Green Saddle Bags that you could order that year. She put 170,000 miles on it, when she met Don Wrench. She wanted to trade the bike in for a Honda with an electric start. She had polio when she was young and now it was getting hard to kick start the bike. Don convinced her to keep the bike and made it easier for her to kick it. They started to ride together and swapped stories. She taught a lot of people to ride Harley's, and for their test; she would take them to Irondale Hill in southern Ohio to test their skills and heart. Born in 1916 in Warren, OH and later moved to North LIma, OH, where she was living with her husband. He died in 1970 & also was a Road Warrior riding in the Wind. In high school she got a college scholarship in Track and Field, but had to turn it down. It was the Depression and was needed on the family farm. One day Don took her to Bob LaCivita's house and Don forgot to warn her of the gravel in the drive. She took a spill and asked Don to pick the Bike up for her. Sandy, Bob's Wife was a nurse, so she treated Doris's hand injured in the fall. She also ended up with a cracked windshield. Bob had a spare and changed it on the spot. She started to get sick shortly after and ended up with Female Cancer and kidney failure. She beat that, but later got flu-like symptoms that lasted 3 or 4 months. Went to the Cleveland Clinic and was told she had another type of Cancer. They gave her 6 months to live. Shortly after the news, she gave her Bike to Don Wrench. She said she wasn't giving the Bike away, but finding it a good home. Don said it couldn't be in better hands. Winter was upon us and Don said she was a fighter and just might beat the odds. Come spring, nothing would be better than to announce "Doris, here's your Bike back, let's go ride the Ol' Irondale Hill. Doris died that winter. She was a good example of motorcyclists in Ohio. Don started the Irondale Hill Ride in tribute to Doris Crandall and others we've known along the way. Don passed on a few years later and his brother, Dave has continued the Ride in Honor of them both, and others we have lost. We always look forward to October and the ride to Irondale Hill.
