All pictures on Niuatoputapu Island were taken between May 14 and 19, 2007. On September 30, 2009 the island of Niuatoputapu was struck by a 8.3 magnitude earthquake and then hit by the tsunami (Samoa Tsunami) waves. The waves moved inland about 600 meters. 9 people have been killed and 90% of the houses on the island have been destroyed with the villages of Hihifo and Falehau being the worst affected. The third village of Vaipoa was relatively unharmed. Most pictures posted here are of places that were destroyed on September 30, 2009. Photos of places affected by the tsunami are marked by the asterisk (*). Images obtained on Google Earth so far do not reflect damages done by the tsunami.
