A sad time it was in our history, the whole section who fought on the Boer's side was wiped out in this fierce battle (Magersfontein) and only one or two soldiers survived the battle. Brave men were they indeed for they were totally outnumbered by the English soldiers who surrounded them resulting in a battle to the end.
Oh, I forgot. A sample of hair was taken from the head and only turned up many many years later in the UK effects of someone who was there at the time. The name of "Bambata" had been spelt in reverse - Atabmab - in the containing slip of paper. When the DNA was check (presumably with that of living decendents of Bambhata in the Mpanza area)it did not prove the connection, so perhaps the Maputo (Lorenzo Marques)version of his escape was indeed correct!
