I reckon the track is closed at present, due to the amount of rock falling down the hillside during earthqake aftershocks...
We have been getting those since 4 Sept 2010. Heaps of them!
I understand that two or thee people have lost their lives in the hills, while walking. Feb 22 2011...
Life goes on, but there are a lot of houses in the city and suburbs that have been seriously damaged - some thousands of them.
Peter, Christchurch, NZ.

As the crow flies, it is more like 6.5km, Sumner beach to Purau Bay, and as the Kiwi drives, it is like 35km via Lyttelton and Diamond Harbour...
Under present road conditions, it would take you more like over an hour to drive, as there is a lot of damage to the roads from Sumner to Lyttelton. Maybe in Lyttelton too.
By one of those boats, it would be quicker, assuming the sea was not up. But maybe the jetski would bitz the field if the race was on...
Not for me though! P, ChCh

Hi Grovesmuk, I think that a heap of rock have fallen from the Castle Rock and other exposed rocks on the Banks Peninsular...
This is all because of the thousands of earthquake aftershocks we have been getting here since 4 Sept 2010.
Up to 17/6/2011, there had been 7350 aftershocks - as I understand it, those are all over *2.0 magnitude * on the Richter scale.
Barely a day goes past without a good shake or three or more.
For example, on Thursday 23 June, only three days ago, between 10:34pm (Mag 5.4 shake) and the (M 3.5) shake at 3:10pm the Friday afternoon, there was a total of 23 aftershocks, all over M 2.8. _ Another sleepless night for many, including me! _
Cheers, ChCh, Peter...

oops, just noted that I had put the South Brance, when it should be the North Branch of the Hurunui River.
That one goes into Lake Sumner, whereas the South Branch joins up a few kilometres closer to the east coast.
Sorry about that... Peter.

It was a private hut but I think it has now been taken over by DOC after a tenure review.

I walked up there some months ago, grovesmuk, but is has changed compared to what it was like way back when I was only 15 years old.
And the Emely Falls too.
Still remember what it was like after the big flood, 1974, I think it was. We got up there on the Saturday. Good lord, what a mess, with 4 or 5 kids drowned, one batch destroyed by the floodwaters & one picked up, moved across the road, turned 180º & put down gently. Only one window cracked, a floorboard broken & that was it.
Still walk past that batch when I go down to get the paper...
But, for all that, it sure is a lovely place.

Thanks grovesmuk :-) I have never been to the UK, only Oz for 18 yrs & NZ.
But my Lad has spent some 18 mths in England, say a good part of the UK, Europe etc. Even did the Three Peaks Challange last year. While he was actually a driver, he did two peaks on the weekend & half way up the other. But he'd already climed that one a few months before while there was ice & snow on the ground still.
Cheers, Mate! Peter.
